Liposuction
Would I Benefit From Liposuction?

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, liposuction is one of our more popular procedures. Liposuction is the process of removing excess fat in order to slim, reshape, and improve contour of specific areas of the body. Liposuction is useful to treat a number of areas, including the neck, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms, back, and calves.

Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, nor is it a substitute for diet and exercise. This procedure is most often used to eliminate stubborn fatty deposits on the body that do not respond to weight-loss measures.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction Surgery?

A candidate for liposuction should be in generally good physical health, a non-smoker, and lack any medical conditions that may hinder the ability to heal properly. Ideal candidates are also within thirty percent of their target weight for their height, age, and gender.

As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness and begin to accumulate deposits of fat in some areas of the body. Liposuction can be an ideal way to get rid of unwanted excess fat, and the results can be long-lasting with a stable diet and general physical fitness.

Though liposuction is a safe and consistent way to treat problem areas, patients should be aware that liposuction is not a solution for excess or sagging skin, or cellulite. Depending on your desires, your plastic surgeon may suggest additional procedures to help you reach your full aesthetic goals.

What to Expect from your Consultation

During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will review your medical history, including any known allergies or previous surgeries, to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction. A board-certified plastic surgeon will review the entire process of liposuction with you, including recovery time and potential associated risks. If you have any questions about the procedure, you should not hesitate to ask during your consultation.

How is Liposuction Surgery Performed?

Liposuction is performed through small incisions that, whenever possible, are placed in well-hidden areas of the body. After general anesthesia is administered and the incisions are made in the target areas, a thin hollow tube (cannula) is inserted to loosen excess fat. This technique uses a controlled motion to dislodge the fat deposits, which are then suctioned out of the body through the cannula.

Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures and elastic bandages are applied to the site, both to reduce swelling and to compress the skin to the new contour.

Recovery after Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so in the majority of cases patients are allowed to return home the same day of surgery after recovering from anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medications and give you specific instructions for care of the surgical site.

Some swelling and bruising is normal in the weeks that follow liposuction; it may take a few months to fully dissipate and for the newly-shaped contours to develop, but results will be apparent shortly after the procedure is performed.

Potential Risks of Liposuction Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks associated with liposuction, which may include:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Asymmetrical contours
  • Infection
  • Fluid accumulation

To minimize risk, you should always ensure that your plastic surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and that the procedure is being performed at an accredited hospital or surgical facility.

How much does Liposuction Surgery Cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the national average cost for liposuction in the United States is approximately $3,200. However, this figure will fluctuate depending on your location, the surgeon performing the procedure, the surgical center at which it is carried out, and your aesthetic goals. Your plastic surgeon should review the entire costs for liposuction during your consultation.

This is a 2 year follow-up revision rhinoplasty case. The patient had had 2 prior rhinoplasties in the past and was bothered by the nasal deviation, the dorsal hump, and the under-rotated and under-projected tip. In the post-operative views, you can see the nose is straighter, symmetric dorsal aesthetic lines have been established, the dorsal hump was removed, and the tip was elevated and rotated. It’s amazing how a more symmetric and proportional nose improves the balance and overall aesthetics of the face. Posted with permission.

This is a great example of how buccal fat removal changes the face. Buccal fat removal involves removing fat from the lower cheeks and the purpose is to narrow the lower 1/3 of the face. With removal of the buccal fat pad, the face appears less round and more angular or V-shaped. Buccal fat removal was popularized and trending during the pandemic, however, not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. Ideal candidates are younger patients in their 20-30’s with a rounder face, and excess volume of the lower cheeks. As we age, the face loses volume and therefore patients in their 40’s plus may not be good candidates. An article in our journal from 2021, The Role of Buccal Fat Pad in Facial Aesthetic Surgery, by Drs. Rohrich and Stuzin, highlighted that this procedure can be beneficial in certain patients but if over resected or performed in the wrong patient, can lead to premature aging and midface distortion. How important is the chin in a rhinoplasty case? This patient’s results show how important the nose-chin relationship is for a balanced and proportional profile. This patient had a crooked nose, a prominent dorsal hump, and a very deficient chin. After straightening her nose, removing the dorsal hump, lifting and refining the tip, and performing a sliding genioplasty; look how much her profile has changed aesthetically for the better.

In facial feminization surgery, a common question we get is how do we contour the forehead and orbital rim. There are two main techniques that craniofacial surgeons utilize. A type 1 technique is where we use a burr or shaving device to shave and contour the bone to set it back or make it less prominent. To be a good candidate for this technique, one would have to have thick bone, a smaller frontal sinus, and less frontal bossing. A type 3 technique is where we use a saw to cut off the outer part of the frontal sinus bone, shave down the forehead and then replace the bone with titanium plates and screws. Good candidates for this procedure are patients with thin bone of the frontal sinus, a large frontal sinus and significant frontal bossing. We determine which technique would best achieve a patient’s goals through a clinical exam and a CT scan. Posted with permission. Videos are educational.
