Xeomin® Filler Treatment
Noninvasive treatments continue to increase as patients want shorter downtime and faster recovery. For reduction and prevention of wrinkles and fine lines, Xeomin® is a product that can do this safely and works similar to Botox®. Xeomin® is a highly purified form of the neurotoxin that has undergone a process to remove accessory proteins. It is a FDA-approved injectable substance derived from bacteria and is most commonly used to treat wrinkles between the eyebrows or the “11’s”, forehead wrinkles, and wrinkles around the corners of the eye or crow’s feet. Like Botox®, Xeomin® can be used in other areas of the face and neck, however, be sure to be evaluated by a board certified plastic surgeon or other highly skilled injector. Xeomin® injections are well-known to give the face a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Am I a Candidate for Xeomin®?
The face and specifically the eyes are typically the first parts of our body to show signs of aging, often in the form of frown lines, smile lines, crow’s feet, or forehead furrows. Wrinkles in the face can give you the appearance of being tired and appearing older than our age. If any of these symptoms are familiar to you, you may be a good candidate for Xeomin® injections.
Xeomin® is frequently offered as an adjunct to other aesthetic procedures, such as laser treatments or dermal fillers. When performed together, the combination can not only reduce or eliminate wrinkles, but help to prevent new ones from forming.
What to Expect from Your Consultation
When you schedule a consultation with the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, you will speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon who will review your aesthetic goals with you and perform a facial aesthetic evaluation to see if you are a good candidate for Xeomin®. Be prepared to discuss your medical history, any medications you might be taking, known allergies, and previous surgeries.
How are Xeomin® Injections Administered?
Although Xeomin® injections might seem like a very simple procedure, it is always important to have an expert board-certified plastic surgeon administer your injections. There are numerous muscles and vital structures in your face, and an in depth understanding of facial anatomy is important to successfully inject the face without complications.
Your plastic surgeon will determine the optimal injection sites based on your goals, and administer a number of injections depending on the desired outcome.
Xeomin® works by blocking the nerve signals to the injected muscles. As a result, the muscle is unable to contract, which in turn diminishes facial lines and wrinkles. Xeomin® is administered in small amounts through a thin needle. There is minimal pain involved, if any, and the procedure usually takes only a few minutes to complete.
Recovery after Xeomin® Injections
There is no recovery time after Xeomin® is administered; patients may resume their normal level of activity immediately. There may be a small amount of swelling at the injection sites, which usually resolves quickly. You should not, however, rub the treated areas after injections because the Xeomin® may relocate to other parts of the face.
The results of Xeomin® injections are not typically apparent right away. It may take five to seven days to see the full effect of treatment, and results typically last three to four months. Many patients schedule regular Xeomin® sessions to extend the effects of their treatment.
Potential Risks Associated with Xeomin® Injections
If administered by a board certified plastic surgeon, Xeomin® can be injected safely and with minimal risks. However, there are potential risks that can be associated with any procedure. The potential risks of Xeomin® injections may include:
- Redness, bruising, or swelling at injection sites
- Headache
- Nausea
- Flu-like symptoms
- Temporary facial weakness
It is a common misconception that Xeomin® is harmful and can cause botulism. To date, there has never been a verified case of Xeomin® causing botulism or the symptoms thereof when administered by a board-certified plastic surgeon. There have been botched procedures caused by non-board certified plastic surgeons, which is why it is exceedingly important to only receive Xeomin® injections from an expert plastic surgeon that specializes in facial procedures.
What Does Xeomin® Cost?
It is difficult to give an average cost of Xeomin® injections due to several variables, such as your location, the expertise of the plastic surgeon, and the number of injections required to reach your aesthetic goals can all affect the cost of Xeomin® treatment. Be sure to discuss all costs associated with your treatment during your consultation.
