Rejuvenate Your Neck with Expert Neck Lift Surgery
A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the jawline and neck. It can decrease the signs of aging, smooth asymmetric contours, and treat excess skin and fatty deposits under the neck and chin.
Aging, heredity, environment, and stress are all factors that can cause a loss of the contours and shapeliness of the chin, neck, and jawline. Patients who opt for a neck lift in Chicago seek to improve visible sagging and prominent jowls.
WHAT IS A NECK LIFT?
People often get a neck lift to combat aging by removing loose neck skin, preventing jowls from forming, removing excess fatty deposits, and resolving muscle banding around the neck.
This process creates a youthful look for the neck, reducing wrinkles and sagging, as well as a double chin and a turkey-wattle neck. The neck lift can often be paired with a facelift for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
BENEFITS OF A NECK LIFT
- Improved Contour: Tightens loose skin and redefines the jawline for a youthful appearance.
- Reduction of Fat Deposits: Removes excess fat beneath the chin and along the jawline, creating a sculpted look.
- Enhanced Skin Quality: Tightens remaining tissue, resulting in smoother, firmer skin texture.
- Long-Lasting Results: Many patients enjoy enduring improvements with proper post-operative care.
- Minimal Scarring: Incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring over time.
- Boost in Overall Aesthetic Harmony: Enhances facial features by providing balance between the neck and face.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A NECK LIFT?
You may be a good candidate for a neck lift if any of the following three common problem areas of the face are familiar to you:
- Deflation: As we age, we lose facial fat volume. This is usually most noticeable as hollowness just below the cheeks or the descent of fat in the jaw, neck, or other parts of the face.
- Radial Expansion: Facial ligaments weaken over time, and the attached tissue separates, causing a loss of definition in the jawline, prominent smile lines around the mouth, and more pronounced jowls.
- Neck Sagging: As muscles loosen, fat accumulates under the chin. At the same time, the skin loses elasticity, causing fullness around the jaw and neck.
There is no way to stop aging; however, facial rejuvenation can slow it down and restore you to a more youthful version of yourself. While it is not an anti-aging cure, a well-performed neck lift can give you a much younger-looking appearance.
People who are not in good physical health, allergic to anesthesia, or suffer from chronic health problems may not be ideal candidates for a neck lift.
Non-smokers are the best candidates for the neck lift procedure since smoking can have a negative impact on the health of the skin. This can lead to complications during surgery and the healing process. If you are a smoker, you will need to quit smoking well in advance of your neck lift. Avoiding smoking during recovery is also key.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CONSULTATION
Always consult with Dr. Parit A. Patel before undergoing a neck lift. Ensure you understand the potential risks and recovery period associated with the procedure. If looking younger is your goal, your surgeon may be able to recommend other procedures that, when coupled with a neck lift, will help restore balance and harmony to your face and body.
At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, we thoroughly review your medical history (including past procedures, current medications, allergies, and all pre-existing conditions), speak with you about your expectations, and provide an extensive overview of the procedure. We will also discuss the cost of the procedure and what you should do after the surgery to hasten your recovery.
HOW IS A NECK LIFT PERFORMED?
Like most surgical procedures, a neck lift is performed by administering general anesthesia, sedation, or local anesthesia to ensure comfort during the operation. Then, depending on your aesthetic goals, your surgeon may perform either a traditional neck lift or a limited incision neck lift.
During a traditional neck lift, the incision is made at the hairline near the sideburns and extends around the ear, as close to the hairline as possible, to hide any visible scarring that may occur. In a limited incision neck lift, shorter incisions are made only around the ear. The type and length of the incisions depend on the extent of the procedure.
After the incisions are made, the tissue beneath the neck skin is repositioned. Muscles and soft tissue are tightened, and excess fat is removed or redistributed. Skin is repositioned and tightened over the contours of the neck and chin, and any loose or excess skin is removed.
Once the corrections are made, the incisions are closed using sutures, and the patient is transferred to a post-anesthesia care unit.
RECOVERY AFTER A NECK LIFT
A neck lift is an outpatient procedure, so patients can typically go home the same day. Swelling and bruising at the site of the incisions are normal. To ensure the best possible outcome, it is very important to follow all instructions given by Dr. Patel, including medications, wound care, and follow-up appointments.
The sutures are usually removed within a few days of the procedure. Patients should keep their heads elevated slightly and avoid bending or twisting their necks excessively. Do not apply ice directly to the neck or chin because it can reduce blood flow in the affected areas.
Swelling and bruising typically go away within a few weeks. The full results of a neck lift will be visible within a month after the procedure.
HOW MUCH DOES A NECK LIFT COST?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average neck lift cost in the United States is approximately $4,500. However, this figure will vary depending on geographic location, the plastic surgeon, and your aesthetic goals.
At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, we will provide a detailed price breakdown during the initial consultation. Most health insurance providers do not cover any of the costs associated with a neck lift, so if necessary, speak with your plastic surgeon about potential financing options.

Can I combine other procedures with my neck lift?
Yes, many patients combine their neck lifts with facelifts or eyelid surgeries for comprehensive rejuvenation effects across multiple areas of concern during one recovery period.
What type of anesthesia is used during the procedure?
A neck lift is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the complexity of your case and your surgeon's recommendation.
How long do the results of a neck lift last?
The longevity of results varies by individual but can last several years with proper care. Skin type, age, and lifestyle choices significantly affect how long results may endure.

This is a 3 month follow-up for an otoplasty or ear pinning procedure. The patient was bothered by how far his ears projected forward and how his ears were a major focus of his appearance. In the post-operative photos, the ears have been re-positioned in a more aesthetic and natural way. The patient’s facial features now become the focal point of his appearance and not the ears. A relatively simple yet powerful procedure. Posted with permission.

This is a 2 year follow-up revision rhinoplasty case. The patient had had 2 prior rhinoplasties in the past and was bothered by the nasal deviation, the dorsal hump, and the under-rotated and under-projected tip. In the post-operative views, you can see the nose is straighter, symmetric dorsal aesthetic lines have been established, the dorsal hump was removed, and the tip was elevated and rotated. It’s amazing how a more symmetric and proportional nose improves the balance and overall aesthetics of the face. Posted with permission.

This is a great example of how buccal fat removal changes the face. Buccal fat removal involves removing fat from the lower cheeks and the purpose is to narrow the lower 1/3 of the face. With removal of the buccal fat pad, the face appears less round and more angular or V-shaped. Buccal fat removal was popularized and trending during the pandemic, however, not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. Ideal candidates are younger patients in their 20-30’s with a rounder face, and excess volume of the lower cheeks. As we age, the face loses volume and therefore patients in their 40’s plus may not be good candidates. An article in our journal from 2021, The Role of Buccal Fat Pad in Facial Aesthetic Surgery, by Drs. Rohrich and Stuzin, highlighted that this procedure can be beneficial in certain patients but if over resected or performed in the wrong patient, can lead to premature aging and midface distortion. How important is the chin in a rhinoplasty case? This patient’s results show how important the nose-chin relationship is for a balanced and proportional profile. This patient had a crooked nose, a prominent dorsal hump, and a very deficient chin. After straightening her nose, removing the dorsal hump, lifting and refining the tip, and performing a sliding genioplasty; look how much her profile has changed aesthetically for the better.

In facial feminization surgery, a common question we get is how do we contour the forehead and orbital rim. There are two main techniques that craniofacial surgeons utilize. A type 1 technique is where we use a burr or shaving device to shave and contour the bone to set it back or make it less prominent. To be a good candidate for this technique, one would have to have thick bone, a smaller frontal sinus, and less frontal bossing. A type 3 technique is where we use a saw to cut off the outer part of the frontal sinus bone, shave down the forehead and then replace the bone with titanium plates and screws. Good candidates for this procedure are patients with thin bone of the frontal sinus, a large frontal sinus and significant frontal bossing. We determine which technique would best achieve a patient’s goals through a clinical exam and a CT scan. Posted with permission. Videos are educational.
