Male enhancement surgery or penile enlargement surgery is the name given to a set of surgical procedures designed to increase the length and girth of the male penis. This is performed by releasing a suspensory ligament anchoring the penis to the pubic bone and removal of fat of the groin area to increase length and fat grafting to the penis to increase girth. Interest in this procedure has increased over the years due to the high patient satisfaction, the immediate and permanent results and safety associated with the procedure. Male enhancement surgery is a good option for anyone who is self-conscious about the size or shape of their penis or who would just like improvements to what they already have.
The procedures involved in penile enlargement surgery are highly individualized according to each patient’s aesthetic goals, and may include surgical release of the suspensory ligament, liposuction or fat removal of the pubic area, and or fat grafting to the penis.
If you are someone who is in good health and have struggled with the size or shape of your penis after puberty, then you may be a good candidate for surgical intervention. Male genital anatomy comes in all shapes and sizes but some men would like improvements in the overall size or shape of their penis. It is important that the anatomy and function of your penis are normal before undergoing male enhancement surgery. Male enhancement surgery does not improve the function of the penis in terms of obtaining an erection or ejaculation.
Candidates should be in generally good physical health, non-smokers, and without any medical conditions that may affect the healing process. If you believe that male enhancement surgery may be for you, schedule a consultation with a plastic surgeon board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, we understand that each patient’s aesthetic goals are unique. Improvement in the size or shape of your penis can lead to a healthy increase in self-esteem and confidence. We are committed to helping our patients achieve their aesthetic goals in a comfortable and private environment.
When you schedule a consultation with our practice, you will speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon that specializes in aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body. You and your plastic surgeon will review your medical history and a physical examination will be performed to ensure that you are a good candidate for male enhancement surgery. Your surgeon will suggest treatment options that are right for your body type and aesthetic goals. We will never perform any procedure unless we are certain that it is the best course of treatment for you.
For maximum privacy and comfort, all male enhancement surgeries are performed in our office surgical suite. A local anesthetic is administered to ensure comfort during the procedure. The process itself varies according to the individual needs of the patient. For penile lengthening, an incision is made at the base of the penis. This allows the surgeon to access the suspensory ligament for release from the pubic bone. If needed, excess fat is removed from the pubic region at the base of the penis to improve the overall length. To increase the girth of the penis, fat is removed from the abdomen or thighs and placed within the skin of the penis circumferentially, to increase the girth. The amount of fat injected is determined based on the aesthetic goals of the patient and the patient’s anatomy. Approximately 50% of the fat injected will resorb over time, therefore your surgeon will likely over inject the area in anticipation of some of the fat not remaining long term. Incision sites are hidden and not noticeable after surgery, your plastic surgeon will place the incisions as strategically as possible and attempt to conceal them within natural folds and contours of the body.
Male enhancement surgery can be performed in one stage. Some patients want additional fat injected to increase the girth of the penis further, which can be performed after 3-6 months. Your plastic surgeon will outline each stage and discuss the particular process for each individual procedure during your consultation.
The recovery period is different for each patient but in general, there is some discomfort for the first day after the procedure. Most patients only require over the counter pain medication to help ease the mild discomfort. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients will be able to return home the day of surgery. Your plastic surgeon will give specific instructions for post-surgical care and specifically wound care. It is very important to follow all of these instructions to mitigate any potential risks that are associated with male enhancement surgery.
If further fat grafting is desired, this can be performed after the previous stage has fully healed. Results of each procedure are usually apparent right after surgery, but the full aesthetic results may not be visible until swelling and bruising subsides, which may take six to eight weeks.
Any surgical procedure involves some potential risks; in general, the risks of the procedures involved in male enhancement surgery may include:
- Hematoma (blood clot)
- Changes in skin sensation
- Skin discoloration
At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, we take every precaution to avoid potential complications by employing the safest and most innovative techniques. You can further reduce the potential for risk by carefully following all instructions from your plastic surgeon, both before and after a procedure.
The cost of male enhancement surgery depends on the specific procedures performed. The cost may further be affected by your location, your plastic surgeon, and the surgical center at which the procedure is performed. The cost range can be between $5,000 and $10,000 depending on the procedures performed. Be sure to speak to your plastic surgeon during your consultation about the cost of male enhancement surgery, including any payment options that may be available. Medical insurance rarely covers the cost for male enhancement surgery, since it is considered a cosmetic procedure.
If you are bothered by the size or shape of your penis, male enhancement surgery may be right for you.
