Eyelid Reconstruction Chicago
Reconstruction of the eyelid is most commonly performed after the excision of a tumor, or to repair the results of trauma. Not to be confused with blepharoplasty, which is aesthetic eyelid surgery, eyelid reconstruction is a craniofacial procedure to partially or entirely restore a damaged eyelid.
The goal of eyelid reconstruction is to restore both functionality and appearance. You may be a candidate for eyelid reconstruction if part of your eyelid(s) have been damaged or removed due to trauma, removal of a growth, or skin cancer.
HOW IS EYELID RECONSTRUCTION PERFORMED?
For the most complex cases, in which defects extend throughout the entire eyelid, a flap and/or skin graft from other parts of the face or body are sometimes necessary to reconstruct the lid. After general anesthesia, the surgeon will transfer adjacent tissue or skin from other areas to complete the reconstruction. Full eyelid reconstruction may require more than one operation (which is known as “staged” reconstruction). For smaller, superficial defects, a single operation requiring local flaps and sutures is generally sufficient to repair a damaged eyelid.
RECOVERY AFTER EYELID RECONSTRUCTION
After an eyelid reconstruction procedure, lubricating ointments are usually applied to the eye, and in some cases, a loose gauze covering. The initial healing process will involve some discomfort, swelling, irritation, and dry eyes. Be sure to take any prescribed medications to avoid infection, and follow all instructions from your doctor.

WHAT DOES EYELID RECONSTRUCTION COST?
Eyelid reconstruction is a highly individualized procedure, so it is difficult to provide an approximate cost. Be sure to discuss all costs with your plastic surgeon during your consultation. Your medical insurance may cover some or all of the cost associated with eyelid reconstruction, so contact your provider before undergoing the procedure.
