Rhinoplasty
Am I a good candidate for a nose job?

Cosmetic imperfections and nasal breathing problems can be improved through rhinoplasty in Chicago. If you want to enhance the appearance of your nose to complement the rest of your face, a nose job is a viable option. If you have breathing issues, rhinoplasty surgery can correct the function of your nasal structures.

At the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago, rhinoplasty is considered a standard procedure. It corrects a wide variety of functional and aesthetic issues in the nose and nasal airways. This type of facial plastic surgery allows surgeons to bring the nose into balance and harmony with the rest of the facial features.

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose. It can be performed for aesthetic reasons to improve the nose’s appearance and proportion to other facial features, or for functional reasons to correct breathing problems caused by structural defects. The procedure involves modifying the bone, cartilage, or skin of the nose to achieve the desired outcome. Although rhinoplasty has been geared toward women for many years, male rhinoplasty has become more popular. In men, special attention is paid to improving the nose while maintaining the natural masculine features a male nose typically has.

WHAT RHINOPLASTY CAN CORRECT

Surgical rhinoplasty can be used to treat:
  • A nasal profile with a depression or hump on the bridge of the nose
  • An asymmetrical nose
  • A wide or narrow nasal bridge
  • A crooked nose
  • Large or upturned nostrils
  • A rounded or sharp nasal tip
  • An enlarged, hooked, or drooping nasal tip
  • Breathing issues from a deviated septum or nasal polyps
In cases where a previous rhinoplasty has led to poor or unsatisfying results, revision rhinoplasty is available to correct them.
Dr. Patel and his team have been great! After reading the other reviews I got a consultation for a rhinoplasty and I knew right away I could trust Dr. Patel. He did not rush through the consultation and made sure to listen to exactly what I wanted. He is very knowledgeable and informs you about the whole procedure in detail. He made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole process. If I had any questions or concerns him and his team were very responsive. After the procedure they called to check up on me and give me any additional instructions to make sure recovery went smoothly. Since my surgery everything has been healing nicely and I could not be happier with the results already. If you are looking for a plastic surgeon look no further, you are in good hands with Dr. Patel! – Victoria

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURES?

Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure, with the approach tailored to your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. Dr. Patel offers various rhinoplasty procedures to cater to diverse needs, ensuring a customized solution for every patient.
  • Cosmetic Rhinoplasty: Focuses on improving the nose’s aesthetic appearance, addressing concerns like size, shape, tip refinement, or nostril width for a more harmonious facial profile. This cosmetic nose surgery aims for natural-looking results.
  • Functional Rhinoplasty: Corrects structural issues (e.g., deviated septum) to improve breathing and airflow, often alongside subtle aesthetic enhancements.
  • Revision Rhinoplasty: This complex procedure, which is performed for patients dissatisfied with previous nose surgery results, addresses altered anatomy and scar tissue and requires specialized expertise.
  • Ethnic Rhinoplasty: Enhances the nose while preserving the patient’s unique ethnic identity, focusing on subtle refinements that complement overall facial features.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

If you have breathing issues due to an airway obstruction or an abnormality in the nasal structure, you may be a candidate for functional rhinoplasty. These obstructions can be due to congenital issues or injuries that affect the nasal structure. If you are unhappy with your nose’s size, shape, or contours, aesthetic rhinoplasty may be an option for you.  Patients who smoke or are otherwise not in good physical health are typically not ideal candidates for rhinoplasty. This procedure is only carried out on patients whose facial growth is complete. That should be around 15 or 16 for girls and 17 or 18 for boys. The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty is someone who has clear goals and realistic expectations regarding their surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CONSULTATION

Any medical center or clinic you choose should be willing to sit down with you and take the time to explain all aspects of the procedure beforehand, including associated risks and recovery. During your consultation, a physical examination of your nose and face will be performed. We thoroughly review your medical history at the Plastic Surgery Clinic of Chicago.  We will discuss your general health, any medications you take, any pre-existing health conditions, and any procedures or treatments you’ve undergone. Tell us about any vitamins, herbal supplements, nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs you’re currently taking before your rhinoplasty procedure. We will discuss your expectations and provide an extensive overview of rhinoplasty surgery’s functional and aesthetic details.  Bring a list of questions to your rhinoplasty consultation, and be prepared to discuss both the cosmetic and functional benefits you hope to achieve. We will take facial measurements and photos and then recommend a treatment plan.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR RHINOPLASTY?

There are several steps needed to prepare for your nasal surgery procedure:
  • For two weeks before rhinoplasty surgery, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin E, and certain herbal supplements.
    • You should be fine taking Tylenol, a similar acetaminophen product, and a multivitamin daily.
  • You should not smoke for at least two weeks before and two weeks following rhinoplasty surgery. Tobacco and nicotine both interfere with healing and can lead to several complications.
  • It is highly recommended that you stay out of the sun for two weeks before the rhinoplasty operation. Daily sunscreen use is also encouraged.
  • You will be given your post-operative medications (usually an antibiotic and pain medication) on the day of your surgery.
  • The use of a saline nasal spray is acceptable. Specific brands will be discussed during your consultation.
  • Do not drink anything, not even water, after midnight on the night before surgery.
  • You may need to arrange in advance for a friend or family member to give you a ride home following surgery. This will depend on the anesthesia chosen for your procedure.

HOW RHINOPLASTY IS PERFORMED

First, patients are placed under anesthesia for optimal safety and comfort during the procedure. Next, incisions are made to allow the surgeon access to the nose. Rhinoplasty can be performed by either an open procedure or a closed procedure.  In an open procedure, an incision is made along the columella, the thin tissue bridge connecting the nostrils. In a closed procedure, the incision is hidden inside the nasal cavity. Surgical modifications are then made, which may involve removing cartilage, using sutures to reshape cartilage, bone contouring, or placement of cartilage grafts.  In a functional rhinoplasty procedure, airway obstructions or breathing issues would be amended; the focus of treatment may be enlarged turbinates, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. It is worth mentioning, however, that both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty seek to optimize appearance and breathing.  Lastly, once the necessary corrections are made, sutures are placed to close the incisions, and the nose is bandaged appropriately. A nasal splint may be applied to make sure the nose keeps its new shape.
My experience with Dr.Patel was outstanding, it all started with some research which narrowed it all down to Dr.Patel. I came to meet Dr.Patel and spoke with him about Rhinoplasty , he made me feel very comfortable with the whole process and talked through everything with me . I got my Rhinoplasty done back in June and I am so happy with the outcome. Best compliment to get after getting a surgery that can alter everything about how you look is “it looks so natural “ and that is exactly what I wanted , a change in my nose but for it to look natural. I am so pleased with my Rhinoplasty since the moment the cast was taken off and i know I would love it even more once I continue to heal. Thank you to Dr. Patel and his team for making this process so easy– Jessica

RECOVERY AFTER RHINOPLASTY

A rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so patients can typically go home the same day. Midface swelling and bruising are normal. Follow all instructions given by Dr. Patel, including medications, wound care, and follow-up appointments. The sutures are removed during a follow-up appointment.  In the interim, patients should keep their heads elevated. Do not apply ice directly to the swelling because it can reduce blood flow in the affected areas. After about a week, the splint will be removed so that your nose can heal into its new shape. It may take up to five weeks before you are allowed to wear eyeglasses again. Avoid blowing your nose during your healing process unless necessary. When it is unavoidable, make sure to only blow very gently.  Take around one week off from work to recover. As you are recovering, avoid playing sports and engaging in any other activities that would put your nose at risk for trauma. Wait for two to three weeks before you resume jogging or swimming. Swelling and bruising typically go away over time.  The full results of rhinoplasty will be visible after all swelling has gone down.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will there be visible scars after my nose job?

Dr. Patel employs techniques designed to minimize visible scarring. In “closed” rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scars whatsoever. In “open” rhinoplasty, a tiny, discreet incision is made across the columella (the narrow strip of skin between the nostrils). This external incision is strategically placed and typically heals very well, becoming barely noticeable over time.

Is rhinoplasty a painful procedure?

During the rhinoplasty procedure itself, you will be under general anesthesia, so you will feel no pain. After nose surgery, most patients report mild to moderate discomfort, often described as pressure or a dull ache, rather than severe pain. This can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication.

Can I combine rhinoplasty with other procedures?

Yes, rhinoplasty can often be combined with other facial procedures such as chin augmentation, facelift, or eyelid surgery to achieve comprehensive facial harmony.

Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?

Yes, the structural changes made to the bone and cartilage during a rhinoplasty procedure are permanent. Once your nose has fully healed and settled into its new shape, these results are long-lasting. However, it’s important to remember that the natural aging process will continue to affect all facial features, including the nose, over many decades.
